ARTIST STATEMENT
LYNN YOUNG’s most recent series of paintings hauntingly explore the faces of women post cosmetic surgery. These intimate portraits look directly out at the viewer confronting us with the challenging reality of how some choose to surgically change their visual identity. The paint marks draw attention to the visceral altering of flesh.The colour evoking memories of pain and inflammation. We search for clues in these blurred and indistinct faces as to why these women have chosen to make such changes; How we arrived at a point where society requires and even celebrates this as a choice? The inscrutable eyes catch our gaze as we wonder if this is conformity or individualism? Power or victimhood?
